Intro FdR

Welcome to the Faculty of Law.

The former College of Law of the Netherlands Antilles was established by national decree dated 6 October 1970. Students were schooled to sit the LL B Antillean Law exam. After 1974 the possibility opened to enroll in a degree course in the Netherlands Antilles that led to graduating with an LL M or Master’s degree. Today the Faculty of Law has grown into a fully fledged faculty.

Law influences many aspects of daily life. Our entire society is governed by law. If one buys a book one enters into a contract. If one pays ones groceries with a ten guilder bank note one transfers a claim on a portion of the gold reserves of the Bank of the Netherlands Antilles to the supermarket.

Law is the subject of the law degree program. Antillean Law is lectured at the Faculty of Law. Law students are trained to be all-round jurists. This means that after graduating from the degree program the aspiring jurist can work in many areas. Graduating with a Bachelor of Law and/or Master of Law will enable the jurist to answer the most diverse legal questions with which he is confronted based on his acquired knowledge about our legal system. This course enables the jurist to spread his wings in all sectors of society.

At the beginning of the academic year 2003-2004 a start was made with the implementation of the Bachelor-Master structure for the Antillean Law program.
There is a wide range of agreements for cooperation between the Faculty of Law and very many other faculties and universities.

If one wishes to practice law as a lawyer, a judge or some other legal profession in the Antilles then one must have command of Antillean law. The degree program stimulates a broad societal interest, an analytical capacity, a feeling for language, and pleasure in mixing with people. In other words the whole world is open to you as a jurist.

If one satisfies the admission requirements, then one can register using a registration form that is available at the central counter of the UNA. Persons that have reached the age of twenty three and do not satisfy the admission requirements, may be admitted to the examinations by the Minister of Education based on a statement from the faculty board that he/she has demonstrated, in an admission exam set by the board, to have sufficient general development and suitability for attending classes.

Further information about the entrance exam can be found in the Entrance Exam regulations of the Faculty of Law that can be requested at the university offices.
