Since
1997 historic Willemstad has been registered on the World
Heritage List of the UNESCO. This means that the international
community considers the monuments of Curaçao important
enough to be preserved for posterity.
From 1990 on, in Curaçao the conservation of monuments
is being worked at in a structural manner. In many parts
of Willemstad a great number of buildings have been restored
already.
For the purpose of broadening the basis for the conservation
of the built heritage the Monument Fund Foundation Curaçao
(MFC), the University of Curacao, Dr. Moises Da Costa Gomez (UoC) and
the Monument Bureau (a division of the Department of Urban
and Regional Development Planning and Housing) joined
forces in April 2005 to work towards education in the
field of conservation of historic monuments on a Higher
Vocational, i.e. bachelor’s level. Solid education
in this field is of importance for the retaining and increasing
of knowledge and awareness. Within this framework the
“Education in Heritage” course is offered
by the architectural engineering department section of
the UoC. |
